Democracy is worth fighting for, so let’s make our voices heard.

In 2021, the EU Commission has made a commitment to develop a cage-banning legislative proposal, and release it by September of 2023. It was a groundbreaking and legally binding promise.

The deadline has passed and there has been no sight of the proposal. The democratic commitment has been broken by the EU Commission.

But this is not the time to get demotivated, as democracy is on our side. The Citizens Committee has already sent an official letter, reminding the EU Commission to act and warning of potential legal consequences. We are waiting for the Commission’s response, but we aren’t waiting still.

This is a fight not only for our animals. This is a fight also for our democracy. That’s why all of our voices are important.

Our History

It all started in 2018, where seven European citizens decided to found End The Cage Age; a European Citizens’ Initiative with a mission to ban cages in the farming industry. Over 170 organizations and caring citizens across Europe joined forces to raise awareness and mobilize the public.

In October 2020, End the Cage Age marked its first success, gathering an outstanding amount  of over 1.4 million EU citizens’ signatures. We all wanted a clear change, and it was soon to be announced.

On June 30th, 2021, the European Commission came forth with a historical announcement to revise the current EU legislation with a commitment to:

  • Put forward a legislative proposal by the end of 2023 to phase out and finally prohibit the use of cages for hens, mother pigs, calves, rabbits, ducks, geese and other farmed animals
  • Phase out the use of cages for farmed animals across Europe by 2027
  • Ensure that all imported products in the EU comply with future cage-free standards
  • Implement systems for incentives and financial support to European farmers during the transition to cage-free farming

This was a groundbreaking announcement that sparked hope towards animal welfare, and also towards the power of democracy within the EU.

Between 2021 and the Commission's proposal of 2023, there have been multiple campaigns aiming to maintain the urgency of the cause and ensuring the proposal won’t be forgotten. Despite our pressure, the EU Commission hasn’t fulfilled its commitments on time. That’s why we must act.

This is a fight not only for our animals. But this is a fight for our democracy. That’s why our voices are important.

Our Network

The network for the 'End the Cage Age' European Citizens’ Initiative unites organisations under a common banner—to eliminate the use of cages in animal farming.

This movement is representative of the 94% of people in Europe who believe protecting the welfare of farm animals is important, and 82% who believe farm animals should be better protected. Cages are a desolate reflection on our society.

Together we will End the Cage Age.
